In the eighteen-nineties and for years thereafter, America reverberated with the name of the "notorious Anarchist," feminist, revolutionist and agitator, Emma Goldman. A Russian Jewish immigrant at the age of 17, she moved by her own efforts from seamstress in a clothing factory to internationally known radical lecturer, writer, editor and friend of the oppressed. This book is a collection of her remarkably penetrating essays, far in advance of their time, originally published by the Mother Earth press which she founded. In the first of these essays, Anarchism: What It Really Stands For, she says, "Direct action, having proven effective along economic lines, is equally potent in the environment of the individual." In Minorities Versus Majorities she holds that social and economic well-being will result only through "the non-compromising determination of intelligent minorities, and not through the mass." Goldman is definitely a victim of some kind of projected infamy because everything she writes is unexceptional, not in the aims and ideals she expresses, but rather that she is so level-headed and articulate. My review didn't make it here for some reason, so I'm trying again.For about 6 years I read nothing but anarchist literature, and Emma Goldman then and now is at the top of my list. My first thought upon reading these essays after so many years, is that do-gooder progs and libs would throw a hissy at some of them--particularly Woman Suffrage and The Tragedy of Woman's Emancipation. Has women's vote (or anyone's vote for that matter) done anything to improve the country's politics,

overall super cool passionate book that brings up important things like um, how to live your life. her language is pretty crass and maybe exaggerated at times. like referring to the catholic church as a heinous black hydra-monster or something. emma goldmans got a revolutionary philosophy even by todays standards. i'd be interested to see what she would have to say about the current shit today, like anarchism as an integral part of the punk scene, the role of women in a globalized world etc.

Anarchism, according to Goldman, is a system that is stripped to the most natural way of human interaction, a way in which you can count on adequate relations, free of biases and baggage from the people around you. Emma Goldman, in a manner not dissimilar to the Ayn Rand's Fountainhead, presents us with an ideal. She brings forward perhaps the only system that can free humanity of all of its self-imposed problems. The caveat? It needs a society filled with Rand's Rourke or Nietzsche's

A true iconoclast visionary. It's hard to believe that this was published in 1910 as many of her ideas have stood the test of time and stood well. Especially her essays on the dangers of nationalism.

When it comes to rating books, I often have issues deciding how many stars I think they deserve. Anarchism and Other Essays is important and I think that everyone should read it. Goldman passionately discusses issues of patriotism, political violence, religion and many more things and, for the most part, I agree with her opinions. But then she disappoints me by going on about "women's nature" when it comes to suffrage and "perversion" when it comes to homosexuality and man does she hate sex
