Nothing original here Lost me within the first 100 pages with the rant about extremists and the West not understanding. Clichéd and unimaginative story with a smart woman who isn't quite as smart as the men but knows it; genius scientist whose work is wanted by bad guys. There's an ex army Ranger who's seen war and loves his country but politicians are idiots or evil or both. Blah, blahA very fun readJust the right mix of sci-fi and thriller. The characters are enjoyable and the author maintains a good pace throughout. I really enjoyed the afterword in which the author separates scientific fact from speculation and elaborates on the various current scientific theories (as in educated hypothesis, not Relativity) that he makes use of in the book. This is the first novel I've read by Douglass Richards, and as an avid reader (mostly sci-fi & speculative fiction), I'm pleased
This is the first book I've ever listed as 'read' without finishing it. I'm listing it such because I've gotten 65% of the way through and just can't keep going anymore - but want the credit against my reading goal.This was a trial. The book could have been written by taking ten words from the start of any sci-fi novel and running a Markov chain off of those words. I'm torn as to my favorite part - was it where in the first chapter he used two pages to summarize the plot of the movie Idiocracy?
Good suspense but classroom hours were too longI listened to this book on Audible while on a long road trip. The suspense was great, most characters well written, and the plot was mind boggling. That said, there was entirely too much classroom time. I understand that the premise is complicated but page after page (or mile after mile!) of physics instruction was just more than I wanted from something I was reading for entertainment. My only other complaint is that there were too many named
If I had to use one word to describe my thoughts on this book, it would be "conflicted". I went into reading it with little expectations since I saw it at the top of the "popular" list in science fiction / fantasy on the Kindle app. I skimmed the book description, saw that time travel was involved and that was all the reason I needed to start reading. Ooof, this one was rough. I don't know what compels me to read books I KNOW will be hot garbage. Sometimes you want to just turn off the ol' brain and let the hours aloft in an airplane fly by, I suppose. But this book I read - for the most part - on terra firma so I don't have any excuse. I am a notable sucker for time travel stories, so when I read the blurb that mentioned it, I was on board. And I DID get a kick out of the sci-fi thought experiments peppered throughout the narrative. Thus:
I really disliked this book. The characters were seen-them-all-before stock characters; the dialogue was laughably cartoonish ("Outstanding, Mr Blake."; "Mark my words... we'll get this guy." etc); there were long, awkward sections of didactic expository dialogue, delivered by one character to another like a college lecture from an academic with an autism spectrum disorder, highlighting the importance of the "show don't tell" dictum -- for an action novel, a hell a lot of the action was in the
